Judy Garland: A Portrait in Art & Anecdote
by John Fricke (Author), Lorna Luft
A big book weighing in on Judy Garland's life.
This is a formidable book, a book of substance, a book of weight, literally. "Judy Garland" is a large book weighing in at probably 3 pounds (though I didn't really weigh it), with 324 pages filled with pictures and anecdotes.
Any fan of Judy Garland, of her music, or her life and times, needs this book to complete a collection. There are many rare photos and quotes adding insight about her life.
The reader is treated to the typical snapshots of her rise to stardom taken along the way, as well as the unexpected and candid shots like her casually playing in a swimming pool with her daughter Liza and another on an amusement park ride with Jackie Cooper. The tying theme in the book appears to be motion. Most of the pictures seem to show Judy in motion: singing, dancing and just playing around
As in any photo journal, the pictures speak to the reader with words adding only dates and facts. This is a beautiful piece of work that is a sincere tribute to an entertainer, described by Tony Bennett, as " the greatest performer the world has ever known". Judy Garland certainly deserved all the pages in this book and more.
