Purplicious
by Elizabeth Kann
A girl's love for pink gets ridiculed by mean girls.
Purplicious, by Elizabeth Kann, is a book that is realistically inspirational. In addition, not only is the book realistic in the story it tells, but also in the extreme detail of its illustrations. Victoria Kann does an amazing job creating the images for the book.
Pinkalicious is a young girl who lives in a world of pinkness and loves it. But one day in art class, everything changes. Pinkalicious is painting when another girl confronts her about making everything pink. Pinkalicious tries to defend her pinkness when she is informed by another girl that the color is passé and that “all the girls like black now.” Because Pinkalicious is unwilling to give up on her color, she is shunned by her classmates.
Pinkalicious gets the blues as she finds that everything she owns is absolutely pink—her phone, crayon, piggy bank, underwear, tiara, giant bunny. Pinkalicious tries to cope by writing about her pinkness in her diary. She starts to feel all alone, like no one else understands her. And instead of feeling proud of her pinkness, Pinkalicious begins to feel that pink “is a lonely color.”
Purplicious tells a sad story about Pinkalicious. However, there is realism in the story, and another who has been shunned or simply made fun of for being different can relate to the story. Purplicious is inspiring as it shows how one should always stay true to themselves.
