A Day with No Crayons
by Elizabeth Rusch
A young girl gets her crayons taken away.
A Day with No Crayons, by Elizabeth Rusch, is both an inspirational and a sensational children’s book. Though you do not need to be an artist, any young budding artist would surely relate to and appreciate such a story. A book about a young artist, Liza, A Day with No Crayons is highly imaginative and original. The illustrations are certainly works of art themselves.
Liza loved the colors of her crayons—the turquoise, the apricot, the fuchsia and tickle-me-pink. . . . And most of all, Liza loved drawing with her crayons. Her walls were covered with crayoned drawings. That is, with the exception of one big blank wall—just think of it like a giant canvas as Liza does.
But as any child who has ever drawn on the walls knows, there are consequences. When Liza’s mother discovers her drawing on her wall, she takes Liza’s crayons away for the rest of the day. “A whole day without crayons?” cries Liza in distress. It was like taking away all the color from her life.
However, as Liza goes on with her day trying to cope without crayons, she finds color through other methods besides her crayons. And maybe, just maybe, there could be art without crayons.
