A Duck So Small
by A. H. Benjamin
A tiny duck tries to find what he is good at.
Little Duffle Duck is constantly teased for his small size and wants to prove himself. He is told by his fellow ducks that because of his smallness, Duffle isn’t able to do anything. However, Duffle is determined to find something he is good at.
Duffle comes across a kingfisher and finds that despite the kingfisher’s small size, the kingfisher is an excellent diver. Duffle decides to test his own diving abilities. He tells the other ducks to see what he can do—except it ends up being nothing. Duffle does a bellyflop into the water and the other ducks taunt him that “a duck so small can do nothing at all.”
Duffle meets a heron who despite his small size, balances wonderfully with one leg in the water. Duffle tests his own balancing skills, but to his dismay, he has none. Duffle is merely greeted with the familiar taunt by the other ducks that “a duck so small can do nothing at all.”
Duffle tries to prove the other ducks wrong, only to fail time after time. There must be something that someone as tiny as Duffle can do…
Benjamin writes a poignant tale about a young duck struggling to be accepted the way he is. Touching and charming, A Duck So Small is an excellent choice to read with young ones.
