Eclipse
Edward and Bella are back together after the near-tragedy at the end of New Moon. Bella knows that she has a limited amount of time left before the Volturi come to check on her state of being. They were very clear about Bella's transformation, and will do it themselves if the Cullen family doesn't. So, Bella and Edward applied for college, knowing it was a ruse to cover for Bella's first year as a newborn.
Newborns are all too dangerous, as the nearby city of Seattle has been under attack from what could possibly be a small army of newborns. The increased murder rate is rapidly pushing Seattle to the top of the list of most dangerous places to live. The Cullens' return to Forks meant the treaty between the Quilute werewolves and the vampires was back in effect. Bella was no longer allowed to socialize with Jacob on account of Alice's visions being blind to werewolves. With Victoria swearing bloody vengeance for the murder of her mate, James, they can't take the chance of not seeing Bella. Edward was forced to kill James in the first novel, and Victoria feels that killing Bella would be justice.
The werewolves and vampires reluctantly join forces when Victoria's plan to unleash an army of uncontrollable newborns is revealed. Both Jacob's and Edward's love for Bella is what keeps her alive. The battle plan revolves around keeping Bella away from the fight, but protected by Edward and Seth (a werewolf). While the war is raging, Victoria seeks out Bella, and Edward and Seth kill her. With the war won, Bella chooses Edward, and the Volturi arrive to check in. They are informed that Bella will be changed soon after graduation. Edward has one stipulation if she wants him to change her - they have to be married while Bella is still human. She accepts.
Eclipse is wonderful. The already rich characters develop further and the worry over Victoria is assuaged. The writing has improved marginally, but the descriptors are still repetitive. However, the story line makes it a quick read.
