Welcome to Your World, Baby is certainly a change of tone compared to the more numerous stories about sibling rivalry. It is a touching and inspiring story about an older sister welcoming the arrival of her new baby sister. The older sister finds it fun because she now has a sister and eagerly invites her baby sister into her world. The older sister promises that they will have great times together. They can have tea parties and “super secret sleepovers”; the possibilities are endless!
Yes, the book, and story in general, is overly optimistic; however, it is nice to have a story rejoicing sibling-hood rather than talking about the bad qualities of it. There are plenty of stories written about sibling rivalry, why not have a story that embraces the ideals? Despite the rose colored glasses the story provides, Welcome to Your World, Baby is nonetheless touching and heartwarming. And inspired by Shields’s own daughters, maybe such great joys of sisterhood are not too far-fetched.
