Would I Ever Lie to You?
by Caralyn Buehner
A cousin tells elaborate and outrageous tales.
With fun, goofy pictures, Caralyn Buehner’s Would I Ever Lie to You? is bursting with a colorful story. Would I Ever Lie to You? tells the story of the narrator, a young boy, who has his cousin Ed visiting. His cousin Ed is one of those people who tell such outrageous tales that are so elaborate, the narrator has a hard time distinguishing between the truth and the lies. Everyone’s met an Ed at some point in their life.
The story starts off with Ed telling an intricately descriptive story about what would happen if the narrator ate the last piece of pie. Ed says that the pie is poisonous and goes on describing just how the narrator would die after eating it. Then he gives his infamous line of asking, “Would I ever lie to you?”
The narrator has been told by his cousin Ed that he was hatched from a giant green egg in a cabbage patch, and has even told the narrator that his head is gradually shrinking. But while Ed does ridiculous teasing, he does tells the truth at times. Still, with such storytelling skills, it is hard to tell.
Would I Ever Lie to You? is a hilariously fun tale that readers will surely enjoy. With a nice twist at the end, Would I Ever Lie to You? fails to run out of cleverness.
