Bringing Home the Birkin
by Michael Tonello
The account of one man’s real life, worldwide adventure of turning designer shopping into a sport.
Michael Tonello, a New England native beautician that specialized in commercial photography was looking for a change of scenery. A business trip to Barcelona was all it took. He fell in love with the city that embraced his personal doctrine: Work to live, not live to work. Shortly after, he found himself jobless with no work visa in a foreign country. Not to mention rent was due.
He began selling his designer pieces on eBay in order to support himself just as a temporary income until he found a job. It all started with a Polo Ralph Lauren plaid cashmere scarf. He soon realized that he could make a fortune selling Hermés merchandise to the wealthy and sometimes famous eBay shoppers (an average profit of $5,000 for one Birkin bag). As he became seasoned in the art of Birkin bag buying, he developed “the formula,” guaranteed to get him one of these elite handbags every time he walked into a store (well almost every time).
This hilarious novel illustrates Tonello’s encounters with romance, blackmail, fashion, fraud, wining and dining in the world’s most beautiful cities, and, of course, obtaining hundreds of Birkin bags (despite the infamous claim that someone must be on a waiting list for two years for a chance to get their hands on one).
This is a must read for anyone who loves shopping and is fascinated with people's captivation of expensive designer handbags.
