Eat. Pray. Love

by Elizabeth Gilbert

The story of one woman’s journey through Italy, India and Indonesia to find inner peace.

The story of former journalist Elizabeth Gilbert could have been tragic. A young writer faced with a marriage crumbling before her eyes stared depression and suicide in the face, but decided to embrace spirituality and love, instead. Gilbert’s profound journey takes her through the finest eateries in Italy to the most spiritual centers in India, and then to the home of a medicine man in Indonesia. Her story, eloquently told through Eat. Pray. Love., is one that is hard to put down.

After her divorce, Gilbert decides to spend a year abroad in Italy, India and Indonesia. She decides to stay in Italy first, where she will indulge in the pleasures of Italian food and conversation. Though it was hard for her to leave, Gilbert travels next to India, where she counters the gluttony of Italy with strict spiritual adherence to prayer and meditation. After her months in India, Gilbert travels to Indonesia, where she had once met a medicine man that she finds again to study with. In Indonesia, Gilbert continues the meditation and prayer she learned in India that brought her inner peace, and also finds time for a love affair. She finds through her experience that there are many ways to find true happiness in this life.

Gilbert’s writing style flows in such a way that it is hard for the reader to put her book down. Being captivated in her journey and feeling as though you are in these foreign places with Gilbert makes for a diligent read. She holds little back in her writing, and her spirituality is infectious. Gilbert isn’t afraid to write about both the good and the bad, the embarrassing and the gratifying. Her life literally becomes an open book in her account of her journey for purpose and it is hard for the reader to realize that she does not know Gilbert personally.

Eat. Pray. Love. is entertaining, enlightening and inspiring. Though not everyone has the means to take such a sabbatical as Gilbert did to travel the world and find herself, her story is so inspiring that the reader shares in the peace that Gilbert has found. The book is a must-read for anyone who has ever felt lost or doubtful as to their purpose in life.
