The Botox Diaries

by Janice Kaplan and Lynn Schnurnberger

The Botox Diaries deals with two women in their 40s, searching for meaning in their lives while battling the issue of age.

Jessica Taylor, the central character in The Botox Diaries, has been divorced for more than ten years from an extremely exotic Frenchman who has recently come back into her life. She is also the adoptive mother of a wonderful, intelligent and talented daughter, Jen, who is playing matchmaker for her single mother. Through it all she has a carefree best friend, Lucy Balder. Lucy has the perfect husband, the perfect children, the perfect career and the perfect lover.

Jessica and Lucy are complete opposites, which is probably why they work so well as friends. While Jessica is a Target-shopper, Dove soap-using PTA mom, Lucy is the jet-setting TV producer with a fixed appointment slot with her dermatologist for frequent Botox injections. Together they commiserate about the issues of aging, being a good parent, and finding time for passion in their lives. Lucy seems to have found passion, but not with her perfect husband. Instead she is hanging out with a hunky and charming television game show host, Hunter. Jessica is totally disapproving of Lucy’s actions and is sympathetic towards the trusting and loving husband.

Even as these women age, their problems of how to handle love, life, relationships and careers remain constant, just as when they were young girls. These women are the SUV-driving, blond-haired, wrinkle-free Manhattan women who most females envy. However, Jessica and Lucy are very likable and very relatable characters for whom the reader comes to really root.

These two women prove that there is such a thing as real friendship, even if you disapprove of what your friend chooses to do in life. It is also a book that allows the reader a glimpse into the lives of Manhattan's upper class with frequent mentioning of Gucci, Dom Perignon, and of course, Botox treatments.
