Amazing Women: Amazing Firefighters
by Marsh Engle, Gay Reboli
An overview of Women Firefighters and some great photos of what makes them tick.
This small hardcover book is a look into the world of a very special and
unique group of women - the female New York City Firefighters. Personally,
I find firefighters obviously brave, yet also caring and extremely
dedicated, but women firefighters hold my respect even more. Part of me
looks at them with disbelief and amazement, knowing that if I saw a burning
building, the last place I would head would be toward it.
Engle highlights the journeys of 25 New York City Firefighters through
black and white photos, poetic quotes and testimonials. Each story is
titled with one bold word symbolizing each "amazing woman," like purpose,
integrity, trust and focus.
One woman, Brenda Berkman, was the pioneer who filed a victorious
class-action suit in 1977; thereby, garnering admission for 42 women in a
department of nearly 12,000 firefighters. I am sure it has been a long and
difficult road for all who followed in her footsteps. This book is a
testimonial to their persistence, passion and determination.
As you read each "bio" the reader can't help noticing how these women,
though bound together by a dream, are all so unique. They are mothers,
nurses, lawyers, students and sisters. They are in our firehouses, on our
streets and were in The World Trade Center.
This is an easy read, yet an inspirational one. It is a great book for
anyone interested in "Amazing Women," or perhaps are one themselves. I
intend on sharing my copy with my son-in-law, a New York City firefighter.
