She's Come Undone
by Wally Lamb
An emotional journey with an unconventional heroine.
In She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb, Dolores Price's life has been no walk in the park. Since childhood, Dolores has had to deal with a lying father who leaves her and her emotionally unbalanced mother, forcing them to live with her overbearing grandmother. By the time she is 13, she is raped by the one person she thought was a trustful friend.
Her problems with weight follow her throughout her life, from childhood to
college, making her already dismal existence, even harder. Hoping to escape her problems at home, Dolores leaves to college. After realizing she has arrived at school a week before students can move into the dorms, she befriends the dorm janitor, Dottie.
Dottie is believed to be a closet lesbian who spies on the girls in the dorm.
With the beginning of classes, Dolores meets her roommate, who is only nice to Dolores behind the closed door of their dorm room.
Dolores realizes that college is not ridding her of her problems, but presenting
her with more. She runs away, hoping to find solace elsewhere.
Her journey leads her to the ocean.
Although Dolores's life never becomes the easy fairytale life she hoped
for, she keeps her head up and comes out stronger for all she goes through.
Dolores' journey through life evokes emotions from the reader, those of
compassion and sometimes frustration for the choices Dolores makes.
Nonetheless, readers will find themselves hoping for Dolores' life to finally take a
turn for the best.
