The Feast of Saint Bertie
by Kathleen Popa
Struggles, trials, romance, faith, all in one book.
Roberta Denys (Bertie) loses her husband to illness. On the day of the funeral, her house is burned to the ground. The struggles with grief as a widow are not enough as she does not know how to contact her son to let him know his Dad is gone. Her friend and neighbor gives her a place to stay but Bertie wants to find solitude and simplify her life. She goes off and lives in a shed. She does not find what she is looking for as one interruption after another keeps her attention elsewhere. This story has a lot of twists and turns and about the time you think you know where it is going, watch out. There are people with problems in their marriage, childbirth, rebellious children, arson and many other things addressed.
Reading this book will let you know that people out there have problems, but their lives don't end there. They can pick up and move forward and begin again. Sometimes living simply can open your eyes to the needs of those around you as well as allowing them to care for your needs.
I highly recommend this book as it has been such an encouragement.
