Sophie makes a trip to Spain to be with Michael who she planned to marry. Nothing turns out like she expects. He fakes his death and then she is drawn into a plot to get gold out of Spain. Phillip rescues her when she is captured by the enemy. Walt helps rescue her and then uses her to get back with Michael to steal the gold shipment from him.
The Spanish American War comes alive as you read about Sophie, Phillip, Michael, Walt and many, many more. You begin to see war through the eyes of the people instead of just a war. You see how it affects others on either side of the war.
There is more than one romance throughout this story. There are twists and turns that make you hold your breath and think things are over when all of a sudden things change.
I could not believe this book fascinated me so much. I already found someone else who cannot wait to read it.
