Forever...
Forever by Judy Blume was a controversial book of the '70s. Blume writes a story about a teen romance that leads to sexual curiosity and exploration. I think this book is a classic and any mature teenager who is thinking about having sex should read this novel.
Katherine and Michael meet at a New Year's Eve party. It was love at first sight. Katherine never felt this way about another boy before him. Just like the title of the book, they thought they were going to be together forever. Many teenagers, as well as adults, can relate to their relationship when they find love for the first time. The two end up falling madly in love with one another and want to take their relationship to the next level. Katherine's mom reminds her that 'once you start having sex, you can't go back to holding hands.'
Once the summer comes, Katherine's dad forces her to teach tennis at a camp. She doesn't know how she's going to deal with being away from Michael for seven weeks. While at camp, she keeps in touch with him by writing letters everyday.
As soon as she goes to camp, she falls for another guy. When Michael came to visit Katherine at camp, she's honest with him and tells him about this new boy in her life. This only proves that young love is immature and teenagers do not exactly know what love is. How can a girl fall in love within the first few days of meeting another boy?
Judy Blume was one of my favorite writers growing up. I think Forever is a great addition to the other books I have read. Her writing is uncensored, so beware of the language she uses to describe intimate and sexual details. Although I am not a speed-reader, I managed to finish the book within two days. This book proves that some things that may seem like it’s going to be forever may not actually be forever, especially when you’re young and exploring new feelings for the first time.
