Always Looking Up: The Adventures of an Incurable Optimist
by Michael J. Fox
One of Hollywood's most beloved stars talks life, love & Parkinson's.
Much has been said of the career and life of Michael J. Fox in the years since his disclosure of a diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease - so I will refrain from recycling the obvious adjectives like “inspirational” or “courageous.” But upon reading his latest book, Always Looking Up: The Adventures of an Incurable Optimist, one comes to realize just how appropriate those adjectives are in his case.
Written largely about his daily life dealing with Parkinson’s and how he handles its ever-evolving challenges, this is the story of a life re-evaluated and lived to its fullest potential. Fox teaches us how important it is to embrace moments in life and treasure every day, and by just a few pages in, we are willing pupils.
The book is divided into four parts – Work, Faith, Family and Politics, and it is written with such clarity of purpose that it is easy to see how each of these areas has shaped Fox’s life and made him into the man he is today. There are sweet, loving anecdotes featuring his children, as well as passages that not only pay tribute to his decades-long partner in marriage and family life, Tracey Pollan, but also describe how his illness has enhanced, rather than defined, their life together as a family.
Fox writes about his illness (and everything else) in such candid terms that it’s abundantly clear not only why he’s long been a beloved public figure, but also why he has become such a source of inspiration (there’s that word again) to millions dealing with their own life-changing struggles.
As a tie-in with this book’s release, Fox will be appearing in a TV special of the same name, airing May 7 at 10 p.m. on ABC.
