All-American Girl
by Meg Cabot
What teenager wouldn’t tackle a would-be assassin just before he pulls the trigger?
Samantha Madison is the typical American teenager, until one rainy day in Washington D.C. when the President’s motorcade drives by the studio where she takes drawing lessons and the President himself steps out to satisfy his sweet tooth. When a psychotic Billy Joel fan whips a gun out from under his jacket and aims it at the President, Sam’s life changes forever. Without pausing to think, she throws herself at the would-be assassin, sending him flying backward and the bullet rocketing off into the stratosphere. Suddenly, Sam is “The Girl Who Saved the President.”
Sam’s not really the fame-seeking kind of girl, but fame is what she gets. Not only does the President invite her and her family to a private dinner at the White House, he also names her Teen Ambassador to the United Nations. However, the biggest change in Sam’s new life comes when she discovers the cute boy in her art class is actually the President’s son, David, who is a fellow artist and No Doubt fan, not to mention an admirer of her white-out daisy combat boots. Following this revelation, Sam finds herself facing a decision more difficult than the one that led her to avert an assassination attempt: Holding on to her long-time love for her sister’s boyfriend or going along with her unexpected “frission” with the First Son.
Meg Cabot’s “All-American Girl” is witty and engaging. Her innovative “Top Ten” lists sprinkled throughout the book give an insightful look into the mind of her heroine, who is truly an “All-American girl” to whom teens can easily relate. Despite the unlikely events, Cabot pens a realistic story that deals with issues facing every American teenager. Like many of Cabot’s books, “All-American Girl” is an empowering tribute to young women everywhere.
