Magical Thinking

A former advertisement writer and alcoholic, his latest collection of essays reminisces on his life, post rehab. However, unlike his previous books, this one focuses more heavily upon himself and his emotions than on his experiences. In fact, while Burroughs' book displays his life for the world to see, it simultaneously tracks his attempt to withhold it from those he cares about the most. Although the tragic events in his life are presented under the guise of sarcastic wit, Burroughs' long-lasting pain is apparent.

Despite the serious content, "Magical Thinking" is undeniably hilarious. The author's narrative talent is particularly obvious in his stories about Debbie, a small housecleaner with a big attitude who slowly infringes on both his mental and financial health. Augusten Burroughs charms and entertains in the newest edition of his memoirs.
