72 Hour Hold
by Bebe Moore Campbell
"72 Hour Hold" is a journey in the lives affected by a mental illness
"72 Hour Hold" by Bebe Moore Campbell is a touching story about a mother named Keri struggling with her 18-year-old daughter, Trina, who has a mental illness.
It is up to Keri to try and save Trina, and help her control her bipolar disorder. Trina's violent and wild behavior is what makes Keri do everything in her power to get her daughter on the right track. Keri admitted her into a 72 hour hold where she is confined, forced to take medicine hourly and has no visits whatsoever. Trina does these 72-hour holds, but is released early for good behavior. After she arrives home, the good behavior vanishes and Trina attacks Keri.
Faced with the obstacles, lets downs and personal guilt, Keri makes a hasty decision. She joins a group of radicals and a psychiatrist that does illegal treatment with stolen medicines for teenagers with mental illnesses. It’s like kidnapping because the teenagers are unaware that they are being taken away. Of course the parents go along, but they know little information. This radical group mimicked the work of the Underground Railroad. Instead of freeing slaves, the group believes they are "freeing" the illnesses of the teenagers, so they can be normal. This is the only chance to save her daughter and Keri follows them hoping for the best results.
Despite the slow pace of the novel, the climax doesn't come until the middle. However, the best part about the novel is the importance of the title. The 72-hour hold concept isn't the most sufficient solution for a person with a mental illness, but it shows the dedication and persistence of a loved one.
I recommend anyone who is dealing with a mental illness and even those who are curious about this issue to read this novel. Don't miss out on the story, it will teach a lesson that you will remember for life.
