IV: A Decade of Curious People and Dangerous Minds
by Chuck Klosterman
Chuck Klosterman’s “IV: A Decade of Curious People and Dangerous Ideas” for an insightful criticism of pop culture.
If you’re in the mood for a pop culture dose, Chuck Klosetermans "IV: A Decade of Curious People and Dangerous Ideas" is the book for you. Klosterman writes around movie stars and musicians, overrated and underrated, in a style that is smart and witty, leaving you unable to put the book down.
"IV" is a series of published essays that is divided into three categories: "Things That Are True," "Things That Might Be True," and "Something That Isn’t True At All."
"Things That Are True" features twenty reporter style pieces on musicians, including The White Stripes, Radiohead, The Streets, Billy Joel, Bono, Wilco, Jeff Tweedy and many more. A very amusing profile on Britney Spears, "The Southern-Fried Sex Kitten", opens this section of the book. Actor Val Kilmer is also featured within this chapter. However, Klosterman does not limit himself to actors and musicians. He delves into writing essays on basketball star Steve Nash, reviews on documentaries such as "Super Size Me" and "Some Kind of Monster." Klosterman also investigates Latino fans of British pop icon Morrisey and a "Rock Cruise," which features REO Speedwagon, Journey, Styx, plus a few.
In "Things That Might Be True," Klosterman voices a number of opinions and theories including the Olympics, guilty pleasures, monogamy, pirates, robots, genetics, VH1 reality shows, how to find your individual nemesis and archenemy, and so much more.
The last section "Something That Isn’t True At All" is a short story that Klosterman wrote in 1999. While some of the material is autobiographical, he claims that all of the "major elements are completely fabricated."
Though the book is broken into different sections and essays, an introduction that opens the book serves as a foundation for the rest to follow. The way that Klosterman criticizes pop culture is insightful and entertaining.
Klosterman has also published other books such as "Fargo Rock City," "Killing Yourself to Live," and the witty and funny "Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs."
