Cherry Bomb
by Carrie Borzillo-Vrenna
From absinthe to Zig-Zag rolling paper, this how-to guide isn’t for the faint of heart.
Carrie Borzillo-Vrenna has done it all. And if she hasn't, she consulted someone who has. The music and entertainment journalist dedicated her book to "chicks that rock" and she's a great example as she incorporates personal anecdotes about landing her first job out of college (writing for Billboard magazine) and meeting her husband (Grammy award winning artist Chris Vrenna).
Her A-Z guide entries are substantive enough to offer adequate help, but concise enough for quick consultation. Most of the sections are by Borzillo-Vrenna herself in a straight-forward, personable language that oozes experience, including a diagrammed guide on how to achieve "smoky rock chick eyes," a guide to picking up "British blokes" with an accompanying English-English dictionary, and "How to Get Backstage (Without being a Whore)" outlining pass hierarchy and backstage do's and don'ts.
Although there are over 20 sections from outside celebrity help, the guide doesn't lose direction with its audience. Some featured section writers include burlesque star Dita Von Teese on how to do a striptease, tattoo artist Kat Von D. on things to consider before getting a tattoo, and fashion designer/breast cancer survivor Betsey Johnson on developing one's personal style and breast cancer awareness.
Borzillo-Vrenna says in her introduction that she named the book after The Runaways song "Cherry Bomb" because that song and other bold ones like it empowered her when she was growing up. This book translates that mindset into applicable advice for the girl that embraces the rock 'n' roll lifestyle, but has a steady day job.
