Chuck Klosterman’s encyclopedic knowledge of pop culture has led to another thought-provoking and witty book. With every turn of the page, Klosterman’s “Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs” will leave you thinking and laughing.
From breakfast cereal to reality television to Internet porn and serial killers and even to computer games, Klosterman takes the reader through every aspect in the realm of pop culture. He has a knack for taking trivial subject matter, exploring it, and creating an insightful conclusion.
Although his explanations and conclusions often seem far-fetched, his ideas are intriguing and entertaining to read about.
“Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs” explores the entire post-modern world of entertainment including television, music, sports, movies, and more. Klosterman analyzes topics such as “Saved by the Bell” episodes, Billy Joel’s coolness level, the rivalry between the Celtics and Lakers fans, the difference between apples and oranges (apparently there is none), Jesus freaks, MTV’s “The Real World,” and Pamela Anderson. He dissects pop culture and covers everything from top to bottom.
However, whatever the topic may be, Klosterman concludes that every aspect embedded within pop culture is connected and somehow tells us something about the way we live and how society should act. He explores how pop culture creates youth culture.
While the book jumps from essay to essay in a fast-paced writing style, it is simultaneously savvy and insightful. His writing is charming, yet provokes.
This is Klosterman’s second book after his 2001 “Fargo City Rock,” which examined the music scene in North Dakota.
So if you’re in the mood to get your fill of pop culture and read about some interesting interpretations along the way, Klosterman’s “Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs” is the book for you.
