Dharma Punx
by Noah Levine
A beautiful story about recovering from a destructive, adolescent lifestyle by finding inner peace and spirituality.
“Dharma Punx,” by Noah Levine, tells the story of how one man’s wild ride of rebellion eventually led to his self-realization and acceptance. That man is Levine himself. This nonfiction book is written completely as a memoir of the destructive lifestyle Levine used to live and the process he used to turn it around, specifically though the teachings of Buddha.
The memoir begins in Levine’s younger years, which meant that days were spent boozing up, getting high, taking drugs and buying cheap liquor, the effects of which led to violence through fights, stealing and other destructive actions to anyone who got in the way. Levine explains how that was the rebellious thing to do in order for kids to differentiate themselves from their parents. It was taking a stand against conformity and bringing down anyone that stood for it. School was a joke and kids who went were hilarious. Blaring music and a confident façade covered what each of them was actually feeling inside, fear, anger, despair, grief and horror.
Levine eventually begins to see the after effects of “living fast and dying young,” when in fact many of his closest friends do begin to die young, too young. He begins to realize that at a certain age there is nothing left after rebellion. In desperate need of something to turn his life around completely, Levine finds the beauty of spiritual healing. Specifically through practices of Buddha, Levine describes how his spiritual freedom is stronger and more satisfying than the “rebellious freedom” ever was. Step by step, Levine finds the road to a successful and meaningful recovery and encourages others to do the same.
This book is an extremely uplifting read. For anyone who has gone through the turmoil of believing they have no place in the world or know someone who just can’t seem to get it right, “Dharma Punx” is an inspiring real-life account of the wonders life has to offer if you are ready and willing to accept them.
