The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star

Motley Crue's Sixx takes the reader through a year of his addiction via his diary and commentary.
After all of Motley Crue’s depravity in “The Dirt,” it seemed as if nothing, not even Sixx’s “The Heroin Diaries” could top it. However, this day by day account of drug addiction completely circumvents any glamour and focuses on his addiction-based isolation as the bassist in one of the most popular bands at that time.
The account spans from Christmas 1986 to Christmas 1987, with accompanying relevant 2006 commentary from Sixx and individuals he mentions in the text. Pictures that coincide with the account, scribbled illustrations, and red and black splattered pages take the reader into Sixx’s broken psyche and despair.
The most important entry, about his Christmas Eve 1987 overdose, is interwoven with commentary that proves to be the most vital in the whole book because, for all practical reasons, he doesn’t remember any of it. It also does a good job of conveying the way in which his addiction affected others around him directly from those people, acting as an additional deterrent to drug abuse, which he includes as a reason for publishing the memoir.
Although this addictive read is ugly and shudder-inducing more often than not, it’s inspirational in that Sixx is alive and doing well decades after this and other slip ups with drugs.
