This Lullaby

by Sarah Dessen

Opposites really do attract.

Sarah Dessen’s novel, “This Lullaby,” is a humorous look at the effects repeatedly remarried parents can have on their teenage children. Remy Starr’s flighty mother is getting remarried for the fifth time and all the years of watching the men come and go has taken its toll on her outlook on life. A cynic through and through, Remy doesn’t believe in true love or that relationships can last. In fact, she fully believes the lyrics to the popular song she’s heard her whole life that just happens to be written for her by the father she never met: “I will let you down.” Because of this outlook, Remy’s been through her fair share of relationships, but none of the boys she’s dated so far in her short life were like Dexter. Dexter is the lead singer for the Truth Squad and is Remy’s opposite in every way. Even though his mother has been remarried six times, he is a firm believer in the power of love. He decides that he and Remy are meant to be the minute he lays eyes on her and not even her most biting sarcasm can deter him.

“This Lullaby” is touching and hilarious. The clash of Remy and Dexter’s completely opposite personalities and perspectives produces an entertaining and heartwarming novel. Dessen’s writing is didactic without being preachy, and she makes her readers fall in love with even the most flawed characters. Her first novel purely about love and relationships, she still includes that special element of insight and solidarity that has made all her other novels so popular. Remy is a strong but flawed heroine, true to Dessen’s style, that female readers can relate to while still looking up to her. This novel has it all: love and friendship, fighting and making up, heartbreak and acceptance, diet coke and songs about potatoes.
