Someone Like You

by Sarah Dessen

“Best friends” takes on a whole new meaning when Halley and Scarlett find themselves facing some of life’s greatest challenges.

Sarah Dessen’s “Someone Like You” is a touching story of friendship. Halley and Scarlett have been best friends against the world since they were little girls, but Scarlett has always been the strong one, carrying Halley along and giving her the push she needs to make it through life. Their relationship begins to change, though, one tragic day at the end of summer. The boy Scarlett has been dating since the beginning of the summer, Michael Sherwood, is killed in a motorcycle accident and Scarlett is left devastated, mourning the boy she loved. All this is made more difficult by the fact that hardly anyone knew they were together, including Halley’s therapist mother who may be able to help everyone else but certainly doesn’t understand her own daughter. Once again it’s Halley and Scarlett against the world, but this time Halley’s the one who has to hold them both up. A few weeks after Michael’s death, the situation gets even worse – Scarlett discovers she is carrying Michael’s baby and shocks everyone by deciding to keep it. Thus begins the two 16-year-olds’ journey that is well beyond their years.

In “Someone Like You,” Dessen paints a portrait of true friendship that withstands all obstacles to come out stronger on the other side. Scarlett and Halley are sweet and naďve, endearing them to readers who will root for their success till the very last page. This novel encompasses a myriad of teen troubles: Teen pregnancy, death, friendship, fights, troublesome parents, and boys that aren’t worth giving the time of day. Dessen works her magic and blends all these elements seamlessly for a book that speaks to every teen, regardless of the issue with which they’re dealing. The subject matter is intense, but, true to form, Dessen treats it with honesty and insight, cleverly uniting death and new life. Dessen’s characters leap off the page and stay with readers long after the book ends.
