Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide, 2004 Edition
by Leonard Maltin
A handy and affordable film guide.
This paperback annual has been around since the late 1980s and has now
grown to include 18,000 entries. Film buffs may want to save earlier editions as the editors admit they have had to remove entries to make room for the 300 new films included this year. Entries include: the film title; year the film was released; the running time in minutes; a rating from BOMB to 4 stars; the film's director and major actors; a brief review; the MPAA rating; and an indication of the formats in which the film is available. “See” references are included for films that were released with varying titles. Many of the nutshell reviews have pithy comments about the films, with which some readers may even agree.
One of the most useful sections in this guide is the appendix arranged by actors' names, listing their appearances in films included in this book€”thus, some of John Wayne's earlier B westerns do not appear under his name. The book contains an Introduction by Leonard Maltin in which he briefly (and not
entirely favorable) reviews the state of films today. He says he hopes that this guide will lead people to good films they may have missed. To encourage people in this area, Maltin has put together here a list of Fifty Films That Got Away: Movies You Really Ought to See. The editors also include a list mail order sources for videos. With its modest price tag and quality information, this book belongs in the collections of everyone with an interest in motion pictures.
