Arthur's Jelly Beans
by Marc Brown
Arthur learns perseverance.
Reading an Arthur Book is like re-visiting with
friends. Francine,
Binky,
Fern, Buster, Muffy, and of course, Arthur, are
indeed, literary
characters
that share a history with our children.
This latest Arthur tale is a wonderful story for
spring. Arthur is
teased
by his friends for always being so slow, but soon he
proves the old
adage
"slow and steady winds the race." During a jelly bean
hunt, some
contestants
become overly confident and begin to nibble on some of
their loot.
Arthur
keeps his nose to the grindstone, in this case, the
grass, and
continues to
find more jelly beans, causing him to be the winner.
Arthur always manages to teach us a simple lesson,
with this one being
perseverance.
Marc Brown's illustrations are colorful and lush with
detail. Each of
the
characters are drawn in a unique style with monkeys,
dogs, and rabbits
all
different, but yet the best of friends.
There is even a game on the back cover that children
can play with jelly
beans. The questions in the game are great
comprehension questions for
the
story, and the answers are wriiten conveniently on the
inside back cover. Arthur's Jelly Beans
is a wonderful story for ages four to eight.
