Eat, Pray, Love
by Elizabeth Gilbert
A true story about one woman’s search for everything.
“Eat, Pray, Love,” by Elizabeth Gilbert, is a true story about a woman’s journey to find everything across Italy, India and Indonesia. Three years after divorcing from her husband, Elizabeth embarks on a year long journey of recovery, stopping in Rome for pleasure, Mumbai for “spiritual searching,” and Bali for “balancing.”
As an avid traveler who has traveled to India and parts of South East Asia, I was very interested in reading this book. Yet, unlike me, Elizabeth is not a spiritual person at all until she begins to accept God into her life towards the end of her journey. That made it hard to read because she seemed to lack empathy for most of the people she encountered. Although her humor was light and well-written, she focused a lot on herself and her personal problems she had been facing. Having traveled to India, I was shocked she had not been affected by the massive amount of poverty and chaos in that country.
Elizabeth seemed to be too caught up in her own problems and therefore the ones around her were invisible. Yet, this book is true to its word that Elizabeth did experience a journey of discovery. At a quick 352 pages, I do recommend this book to anybody that has ever traveled to those countries or anyone dealing with personal problems.
