Angels & Demons
by Dan Brown
When the unthinkable happens and Vatican City is in monstrous danger, Harvard professor Robert Langdon finds himself in the middle of an international crisis as the only man who can save the world.
Dan Brown’s “Angel & Demons” is a heart-pounding adventure of wit and danger. Robert Langdon doesn’t realize he’s in for the adventure of his life (or one that almost ends his life) when he’s awakened by a mysterious phone call and an appalling fax early one weekend morning. Langdon, a renowned symbologist, is an expert on the anti-Catholic cult begun by men of science who were oppressed by the Catholic church back in the 17th century. The cult, known as the Illuminati, was believed to have been extinct for decades. However, Langdon begins to question this widespread belief when he sees the ambigrammatic brand burned into the chest of the murdered man on the fax in his hand. The next thing he knows, he’s in Switzerland at CERN, the world’s largest particle physics laboratory and home to the most brilliant scientists of the day. The murdered and branded man turns out to be Leonardo Vetra, a CERN scientist who, along with his daughter, has managed to do the impossible: Synthetically create antimatter – a substance that will destroy any matter with which it comes into contact, releasing a destructive shockwave of energy. Unfortunately, the killer is believed to be a minion of the Illuminati, and has managed to steal a large antimatter sample hanging in magnetic suspension on a 24-hour battery. Thanks to a security video feed, Langdon, Vetra’s daughter, Vittoria, and the Swiss Guard know the antimatter is in Vatican City. The only problem is, they don’t know where. What they do know is that they have 24 hours till Vatican City is nothing but a crater in the ground, and even less time until the four leading candidates for the Papacy start showing up around the city, murdered and branded. It’s up to Langdon and Vittoria to apprehend the vicious assassin and save the center of the Catholic world.
Brown’s thrilling novel has it all: romance, suspense, drama, horror, and brain teasing clues. Readers will be on the edge of their seats, holding their breath as Langdon repeatedly comes face-to-face with death and races against time to unearth centuries-old clues in an attempt to avert fate. The shock and suspense run high till the very end, when the unfathomable truth is revealed. “Angels & Demons” is an enthralling puzzle and readers will delight in racking their brains, trying to figure out the clues before Langdon. The drama is deep and intricate, and yet the novel is a relatively easy read in order to be available to all readers. Brown’s grasp of science, history and religion are astounding, and scholars in any of those fields will enjoy his accurate depiction of their myriad traits. “Angels & Demons” is truly a mental, as well as physical, experience. Readers will be eager to continue Langdon’s adventures in Brown’s best-selling “The Da Vinci Code” and “The Lost Symbol,” due for release in September.
