Evermore
Ever isn't like other teenagers. She was the only survivor of the car wreck that claimed the lives of her parents, sister and beloved golden retriever. During the crash, Ever saw everyone in the car walking over a bridge. Instead of following, she lingered behind and couldn't get to the bridge when she finally wanted to cross. She was brought painfully back to her broken body instead, and somehow managed to survive.
Before the accident, Ever was a popular, beautiful member of her Oregonian high school's elite. After the accident, Ever became an outcast who hides her looks under unflattering, loose hoodies (hood up at all times), and ignores her peers with loud music in the vein of the Sex Pistols. She only has two friends at her new school, and lives with her wealthy (but often absent) Aunt - her only living relative. Ever can't handle being exposed to her peers since her near-death experience as she gained the ability to see people's auras, hear people's thoughts and converse with her dead sister.
Things change when Damen moves into town and calms the racket in Ever's head. He is perfect - rich, mysterious and gorgeous. He has the added attraction of being very interested in Ever. It bothers Ever that she cannot see Damen's aura, especially because the only other person without an aura is Ever's deceased sister. However, the secrets surrounding Damen are too intriguing for Ever to resist.
Although Damen's lack of aura forces Ever to assume the worst, she is even more disturbed by his occasional companion and the near death of her best friend. Ever isn't certain what happened to her friend, but she knows that Damen was involved.
The book is a quick read that is based on a vastly interesting premise. The plot keeps the reader entertained and guessing the truth about Damen. The characters are well-developed and engaging, and just when the reader assumes they know what will happen next, the plot twists. A well-written introduction to Alyson No
