Weaving The Rainbow

A beautiful book illustrating the transitions of growing up.

Weaving The Rainbow is a beautifully written book that depicts the journey from white sheep, to a rainbow woven tapestry. The sheep with pure white coats are raised and sheared, and their wool is then combed, cleaned and twisted to form a strand of wool. The weaver then dyes the yarn as each one forms a part of the rainbow unfolding. She then weaves a picture on her loom, winding each color yarn on the shuttle, as "a painter dips her paintbrush in the paint." The finished product is a pastoral scene, using the colors of the rainbow, provided by the sheep

The illustrations are soft watercolors that depict the pastoral farm scenes and are calming to the eye.

Weaving The Rainbow is a book that would be more appealing to an older child , who can appreciate the intricate process of weaving or the creative artistic process of a weaver. Though the book advises its audience as ages 3 to 6, I would recommend ages 4 to 8.
