The Complete Crockpot Cookbook
by Wendy Louise
Create Spectacular Meals With Your Slow Cooker
This cookbook boasts that you will be able to make spectacular meals in your slow cooker. If you are like most people, you have a crockpot somewhere in your house. Maybe it's still in the attic with your wedding shower gifts or in the basement tucked behind your boxes of Christmas ornaments. Well, I actually received a new one from a girlfriend who "re-discovered" hers after years of abandonment and wanted to share her excitement.
As a new bride, over 30 years ago, I tried my crockpot a few times because it was supposed to produce slow cooked tender meats and stews, which it did. I'm really not sure why I put it away. Maybe because the original models were harder to clean, but now the inserts just lift out and can be swished like any pot. Perhaps I felt I had no room for it, being in a small apartment. In any case, I, too, have re-discovered the slow cooker or crockpot, as it was always known, for other reasons. In this age of limited time, deadlines, and stress, this is a great tool for working women. There is no greater gift you can give yourself or your family, but to come home after a hard day of work, and smell your dinner already cooked. And all it takes is a few good recipes and a few minutes putting the ingredients together in the morning.
This book gives you more than a few good recipes. Ms. Louise introduces The Complete Crockpot Cookbook with a little bit of history of this often overlooked appliance, how it has evolved, and a few simple dos and don'ts. The book is easy to use and is broken up into seven chapters: soups and stews, entrees, leftovers, fancy entrees, holidays, side dishes and desserts. For the most part, there is one recipe to a page, each accompanied by a "Tip from the Kitchen." Most seemed easy to follow and I immediately began putting Post-It-notes on the ones I am anxious to try. I read through all the tips, hoping to glean some sage cooking advice. Who knew you could chop up your onions ahead of time and store them in freezer bags for future recipes for up to two months?
If you want to come home to the aroma of a home cooked meal, try this book for some great ideas. And by the way, go look for your crockpot.
