Can You Keep a Secret

by Sophia Kinsella

And what happens when you share yours with someone who can't

"Can you keep a secret?" by Sophie Kinsella, the author of the "Shopoholic" series, was advertised as a quick and easy read, the quintessential summer book. Nothing too heavy, nothing too deep. And while it certainly wasn't "War and Peace" (which I never did make it through), I thought it was definitely higher up than beach time fluff. Which isn't to say it wasn't enjoyable and lighthearted, just that it was also refreshingly honest, horrifyingly funny and full of quick wit. After spilling all her secrets to the handsome man next to her on a turbulent flight, Emma Corrigan shows up to work the next day, only to come face-to-face with the stranger, who turns out to be the owner of her company. And when I say all of her secrets, I mean all of her secrets. The kind you never told your parents because they'd be too embarrassing, or never told your closest friends because they'd look at you funny, or laugh. How she was poisoning the plant of a girl she hated at work. How her boyfriend looked like Ken, but was too much of a geek to qualify. Her weight. All those things that are reassuring to read about other people because then you know you aren't really that crazy. And, of course, having shared all her life's mysteries to this man, they have to, at some point, come out and be used against her - What fun would it be if they didn't? But Emma handles herself a lot better than I could and along the way has some amusing adventures in life – and learns a little a bit about what it takes to be in love. It was a simple story but, sometimes, those are the best kind. The book is by popular English author Sophie Kinsella, and although I have sometimes found that British English humor (which I find can feel forced or fake, too grammatically correct) and American English humor are not compatible, no such problems here. Read "Can You Keep A Secret?" and be grateful that you haven't shared any of your own secrets with anyone else.
