The Happiest Toddler On The Block

by Harvey Karp, M.D.

A parenting book specifically geared for the parents of toddlers aged one to four years.

Anyone knows that raising a toddler can be a hair-raising experience. I am happily long out of that stage, with two, now grown, children, but I remember that time well, as often a battle of wills.

I was interested in reading this book because I have been a pre-Kindergarden teacher of three- and four-year-olds for over 30 years and I am often asked questions by very frustrated parents on how best to raise their emerging child. I am amazed at how many parents, when faced with a difficult child tell me, "I just can't handle her!"

Basically, Dr. Karp likens young children to prehistoric cave children. At first, the analogy seems silly and trite, but as you read on the theories make sense.

From children, aged 12-to-18 months, the Charming Chimp-Child likes to grab everything, grunt and basically play "monkey see, monkey do."

The "Knee-High Neanderthal," aged 18-to-24 months is messy, stong willed and loves to use the new found word "no."

For children, aged 24-to-36 months, the "Clever Cave-Kid" is only beginning to share and take turns and loves to push his limits.

Finally, the "Versatile Villager" for children aged 36-to-48 months tries to behave, but definitely has difficulties.

These short years are the most explosively developmental stages of a person's entire life and this book helps parents to navigate the difficult waters of stubbornness and tantrums, in order for the children to reach their full potential (without a parental meltdown.)

Though toddlers are most certainly cute, charming and endearing, they are also known to be impatient, strong-willed and tenacious. This is a great book to help parents realize the pitfalls inherent in the age and how to deal with them and, most inportantly, to know that all is normal.
