5 Square Low-Carb Meals

by Monica Lynn

A low-carb makeover plan for healthy weight loss and high energy.

Monica Lynn is not a nutritionist, but a woman who grew up in restaurants around food and struggled with weight loss her whole life. She stumbled upon the idea of 5 Squares, a highly successful delivery food service for those interested in living a healthier lifestyle and losing weight, in New York City.

Her ideas, based on life experience of what works, are highlighted in this cookbook. Basically, she advocates "eat more, eat lean." As a society, Americans are, on the whole, overweight. That is an inescapable fact warned about in every health-related article. "5 Square Low-Carb Meals" is an outgrowth of the author's successful business in the weight loss field. She advocates actually eating more meals a day to help our bodies burn more calories and run with more fuel and energy. Sugar and wheat should be eliminated as they are wasted calories, and dairy needs to be limited. Exercise, as in all diets or change of lifestyles, needs to be added for best results.

The book is filled with more than 100 recipes, most simple to follow, as well as success stories for an added dose of inspiration. I especially liked the section called "Staying on Track," which gave you some simple quick ideas for an energy boosting snack and for ideas of what to eat at various types of restaurants. Lynn's approach is nothing outlandishly new, but basic good advice that makes sense. She asks the reader to keep a journal of what you eat to be more aware of the choices you make and she supplies the worksheets that you can use in the book and copy for hopefully weeks to come. Another important key in her plan is to prepare ahead and make what you are going to eat a priority. I find this such an important key. When my husband and I are busy or tired we tend to eat out and order something rich, feeling that we deserve a treat for our hard earned fatigue. Or we grab fast food for lunch, another weight gaining pitfall. We don't eat well all day because of busy lifestyles and then we overeat at dinner. When I ate five smaller meals throughout the day, as the book suggested, I felt better and more energized, but it did take planning to have healthy choices available.

I enjoyed this book not just for the recipes but for the healthy changes it promotes.
