Welcome To Junior's

by Marvin and Walter Rosen

Recipes and memories from one of Brooklyn's most famous and popular restaurants - Junior's.

I'm not sure whether this book is actually a restaurant cookbook with a sense of history or an historical look at Brooklyn with some recipes thrown in for added flavor. "Welcome To Junior's" chronicles a restaurant that has been a Brooklyn landmark for more than half a century and the story of the even more famous borough itself, which it proudly calls home.

Anyone who hails from Brooklyn, and there are millions, or anyone who has passed through the downtown area, will smile and recall memories, landmarks and each unique era as the authors take you on a stroll down memory lane. Each chapter is broken down into decades and a history is given of what transpired up and around the restaurant, which began as the Enduro. After a summary of the times, recipes are outlined with specific helpful hints in a sidebar called "The Junior's Way." Three generations of the Rosen family, beginning with Harry Rosen, have built up this establishment from a humble sandwich shop to a restaurant known for its good food, but made famous by its creamy cheesecake which, by the way, can now be ordered and shipped worldwide for those poor people not lucky enough to live in Brooklyn.

Presidents, politicians and famous sports stars have eaten here as well as my family. My father worked at A&S department store on Fulton Street in the 50s and 60s. He often took us to Junior's when we went with my mom to meet him after work. It was there that I experienced my first egg cream and my first bowl of matzoh ball soup- both heavenly. Best of all was when my dad brought home a neon orange and white striped cardboard box filled with a delicious cheesecake. Reading through this cookbook brought back a flood of memories about not just the food, but the borough as well.

There are more than a hundred recipes that include: onion soup, vienna rolls, southern fried chicken, french fried onion rings, carrot cake with cream cheese frosting and even their world famous cheesecake. This is definitely not a book for those on a diet and don't even think of visiting Junior's if you are watching your carbs. "Welcome to Junior's" is a wonderful addition for not only the cookbook collector, but the history buff as well.
