Mayo Clinic Family Health Book, 3rd edition
by Scott C. Litin, M.D.
Up-to-date medical information for the general reader.
Medical researchers continue to expand our understanding of how the body works. This completely revised and updated third edition of the “Mayo Clinic Family Health Book” attempts to summarize the latest health information in language that is accessible to the general reader. The book covers more than 1,000 diseases and disorders, discussing signs and symptoms of each disease, causes, diagnosis, how serious the problem is and current treatment. The editors emphasize self care and include much helpful material about first aid. Perhaps more important, the first 140-plus pages explore the idea of “Living Well” through proper diet, nutrition and exercise, and by taking preventative measures to ensure good health.
The book is laid out nicely and contains many well done illustrations. These include full color drawings and photographs in the section, “Visual Guide: Anatomy and Common Disorders.” The text is a model of how reference books should be written — providing a wealth of information in clear and succinct language. The book also includes many sidebars with additional material. In the chapter about eyes, for instance, there is a sidebar with advice about purchasing eyeglasses. In another section, there is a full page sidebar listing common infant skin conditions. There are also a series of sidebars that address the question “Are You at Risk?” The editors have also included a sober chapter on “Complementary and Alternative Medicine,” which covers a range of topics including chiropractic care, the use of herbs, biofeedback, and acupuncture.
Appended are a glossary of health related terminology, a list of organizations and a useful index. This book would be an excellent choice for any home health collection and should also be available in many public libraries.
