Annie Loses Her Leg but Finds Her Way
by Sandra J. Philipson
Animals too, need time to heal.
"Annie Loses Her Leg but Finds Her Way" was based on an actual incident, and it's a heart tugger. Annie is a 9-year-old English Springer Spaniel who lost her front leg to cancer. Annie and her 2-year-old brother Max, struggle over the loss of Annie's leg in different ways.
When Max and Annie meet Samantha, a three-legged Golden Retriever, the healing process truly begins to unfold for both of them.
Sandra J. Philipson wrote a deeply touching and sensitive story about friendship, pain, loss and, above all, the love that two English Springer Spaniels have for one another. The illustrations by Robert Takatch are delightfully humorous as well as affectionate and uplifting.
Toward the back of the book is a sweet and adorable picture of the real Max and Annie. And when I saw them, I smiled. There are also some questions to help children reflect back to the story; open a window to communicate personal feelings; a page to create an adventure for Max and Annie; and a page for drawing and coloring.
"Annie Loses Her Leg but Finds Her Way" is geared for children ages 4 to 8, but has a solid place in any animal lover's heart, like mine.
