A Berry Picnic Surprise
by Amy Bauman
Strawberry Shortcake is back and on another berry good adventure.
Everything old is new again. When my now twenty-seven year old daughter was four, she had a Strawberry Shortcake birthday party, complete with strawberry birthday cake, jello and juice. The house smelled of strawberries for weeks, but I had a "berry" happy little girl. Years later, her heroine is back again, as popular as ever.
I don't know exactly what makes her so appealing-- perhaps it's her cute mane of red curls, or the sweet image that strawberries conjure up. In any case, she is adored by many little girls and probably, secretly, by some boys too.
This sound storybook begins as every day should--with a beautiful morning. The illustrations are vibrant, with appropriately lavish touches of pinks and reds. Strawberry decides to go on a hike, and along the way, she picks up her friends. The surprise she has for the group is a picnic lunch at the end of the hike. The story is a simple one of making the best out of every day, and most of all, sharing the fun with your friends.
The reader will enjoy pressing the buttons in order to hear the voices of Strawberry's friends and the animals she passes on the way. The visual illustrations as well as the oral sounds will hold the attention of children ages 3 to 8 years old.
