Office Yoga: Simple Stretches for Busy People

by Darrin Zeer, with illustrations by Michael Klein

Simple exercises to counter office stress

Journalists report that Americans are working longer hours than they did a decade ago. While computers and cell phones have enabled us to do certain things faster and easier, for many people it means being connected to their workplaces on a 24/7 basis. For all the Dilberts out there in cubicles throughout the land, all this work can increase stress. This in turn leads to back ache, neck pain and discomfort in other parts of the body.

Darrin Zeer’s slim book Office Yoga: Simple Stretches for Busy People offers remedies for such ills, which mostly involve adjusting posture, stretching and breathing correctly. The author offers clear instructions about how to do these movements.

Zeer has arranged his book to follow the progress of the day—from Morning Eye Openers through three chapters of exercises to be done at the office and ending with Evening Balances. Most of these movements can be done without attracting the attention of co-workers, but you might want to find a secluded area if you’re planning to do the “Close the Deal Warrior Pose”—I’ll leave it to your imagination.

It may occur to those of us who are not devotees of yoga that part of what makes these exercises effective is merely that they get us to stop and refocus ourselves.

The book also encouragers people to neaten their work areas, suggesting that clutter adds to stress. The author also includes brief quotations by sages from Confucious and Krishnamurti to Fred Astaire and Timothy Leary. My favorite among these is the Chinese proverb, “To be uncertain is uncomfortable, but to be certain is ridiculous.”

This book includes helpful simple illustrations by Michael Klein. Office Yoga would fit easily into a desk drawer for handy reference.
