Hollywood Urban Legends
by Richard Roeper
A bonus for trivia buffs
Richard Roeper, of Ebert & Roeper fame, has given movie and television trivia buffs a quick treat. Filled with the sort of behind-the-scenes info that the public seems to crave, Hollywood Urban Legends is an amusing addition to anyone’s font of useless information.
From classic game show moments that never happened to those mass e-mails that claim the FCC is abolishing God from the airwaves, Roeper manages to set out the facts behind – or lacking from – a slew of Hollywood urban legends, without making you feel stupid for having bought into them. He debunks more than one myth and picks apart the absurdities that are found in every urban legend, with a pointed sense of humor and more than an ounce of common sense. Tabloid culture that we are, it’s nice to know there’s someone thinking beyond the headlines and looking for the truth.
Was Lucy really a Communist? What’s the truth of the Poltergeist curse? Did someone give way too much thought to what Gilligan Island is really about? While these aren’t exactly pressing questions, if you have a partiality to movie minutiae, then pick up Hollywood Urban Legends for a quick and informative summer read.
