No Room for the Baker
by Kathe Recheis and Illustrated by Tibor Gergely
What happens when a Baker's home is filled with cats, dogs, and birds?
I'm a huge animal lover! If I could, I'd love to have a big piece of open land
adjoined by a babbling brook with lovely gardens, where fruits and
vegetables and flowers surround all my animals and my family for the rest
of my
life. It would be a dream come true.
The Baker is just the person who has all that, and more! He runs a
successful business with which he's able to comfortably support his family. His children
Matthew and Agatha help him with the delivering and selling of the baked
goods, as well as keeping up with the daily chores of running a home.
They have a cat,a dog, and two canaries that live in the house, and outside in
the barn lives an old white horse who brings much happiness as well to the
family.
As time goes on the Baker's family grows, the animal family that is! And now his
home is overrun with cats, dogs, and birds. The children love it, but the
Baker is getting overwhelmed and tells his children that the animals must go!
The Baker now has some hard decisions to make, and even though his children
are not happy about those choices, the Baker will find out something even
more
profound on his own, as he realizes what truly is important to him.
A sentimental ending that is so touching it made me teary eyed.
Richly worded in sentiment, honesty, and love by Author Kathe Recheis, and
accompanied by the adorable, cheerful, heartfelt and lively illustrations by
Tibor Gergely, make this a story worth sharing with a child.
On an interesting side note - the "mother" is missing from the story line.
There is nothing mentioned about her, but what is mentioned is how
important the
family works together as a team to keep them happy and fulfilled.
There's always plenty of room in your heart for a story as special as this
one.
