A Funny Think Happened on the Way to the Throne
by Georgia Richardson
A clever view of life as a single parent.
Georgia Richardson is a funny, funny woman. It stands to reason that her first book, “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Throne” made me choke on my diet coke and snort Oreo cookies. Her droll observations made me think of Erma Bombeck and Shel Silverstein slurping down Brandy Alexanders and pondering the meaning of life while nibbling on cocktail wieners. I too have experienced the technological wonder of mammograms. I too have counted ceiling tiles during business meetings that go on forever. I am soft clay in the hands of my manipulative children. Like Ms. Richardson, I have an ongoing crush on Rhett Butler (What was Scarlet thinking?). I think diets are devised by the thin to torment the chubby. Who would have thought there was another red head somewhere in the world with these twisted thoughts? Who would have thought her moniker would be Queen Jaw Jaw?
Unique though Ms. Richardson’s perspective may be (“I was a Cake Decorating Dropout”), her weird life experiences have a universal flavor to them (“Decorating the Tree, Or Where Did Everybody Go?”). Her frustrations with men, girlfriends, siblings, pets, other people’s kids, men, her own kids, men, parents and diets touch a chord with many of us. Every one else is lying.
