Bird by Bird
by Anne Lamott
Bird by Bird: How to Live and Write
Although Anne Lamott has been a published author for most of her adult (and young adult life), her recent popularity has put her on the literary map. Anne Lamott knows what good writing is. So, why not write a book about it? In Bird by Bird, Lamott tells her history and experience as a writer, but also as a human being. The candid pages exemplify good writing technique, ideas, and practices, but Bird by Bird is far more than just a manual for good writing. For example, in sharing some of her own insights she comments that her line, “what lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters, compared to what lies within us,” is a gem discovered while high on LSD. As a human being, Lamott accepts and uses her flaws, no matter how painful the experience. This recognition carries over into her writing, a lesson she would have us all take to heart. From fighting writer’s block to raising a child as a single mother, Lamott opens up as though in private conversation. Bird by Bird is a lesson. Bird by Bird is a handbook. Bird by Bird is over far too quickly.
