My Friend Leonard

A follow-up to James Frey’s A Million Little Pieces.
My Friend Leonard begins where A Million Little Pieces left off. This book did not cause as much controversy as Pieces. One of those reasons was due to the message on one of the first pages of the book that says, “Some names and identifying characteristics have been changed. Some sequences and details of events have been changed.”
With that out of the way, Frey takes us on another journey.
At the end of Pieces, Frey was on his way to jail leaving his girlfriend Lilly behind. He promised her he would be out soon and would be together again. Leonard picks up from there.
Most of the book revolves around one event that happens early on (at the end of Pieces, in the back pages actually). I won’t ruin it for anyone, but let’s just say it has some devastating effects.
While Pieces was all about rehab, Leonard is about life after rehab; it’s about trying to get back to normal while staying sober. Above all, it’s about friendship and what lengths one will go to for said friendship. Leonard, who Frey met in rehab, is his best friend and helps him when he needs it the most.
They may be the most unlikely of pairs, but each cares for the other as if they were father and son. And to a certain extent, they are.
