A Dirty Job

by Christopher Moore

A moving, interesting, & wickedly entertaining read!

If anybody can write a book about being Death (you know, the Grim Reaper), and make it funny, it’s Christopher Moore. And in his newest book, A Dirty Job, he does just that.

The book revolves around the world of Charlie Asher – ultimate Beta-male – after the unfortunate loss of his wife. During this time, he discovers (well, perhaps, discovers is too mild a word, but it’s the best I can do without giving things – hilarious things – away) a new profession: Death Merchant. As a Death Merchant in the city of San Francisco (home of two main bridges and possible site of the Apocalypse), Charlie must go around semi-invisible collecting and redistributing the souls of the recently departed.

With a cast that includes Sewer Harpies, Hellhounds, and a Buddhist bent on eliminating death altogether; various Death Merchants (including Mr. Minty Fresh, a rather poorly named record store owner); a daughter who kills people and animals just by saying “kitty;” an employee who thinks he’s a serial killer (and another who’s jealous of his otherworldly position); at least one intrigued SF police investigator; and squirrel people, I’m sure you can guess that his job isn’t exactly a “phone- it-in” kind of position.

Moore’s sarcasm and wit have served him well before (see Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal), and certainly do not fail him this time. A moving, interesting, and wickedly entertaining read!
