Entertaining with the Sopranos
by Allen Rucker
A combination of Italian-American tradition and Sopranos stories.
This beautifully illustrated hard cover book makes for a very entertaining read, especially for an Italian American. Although there are some terrible stereotypes related to the Sopranos television series, I found “Entertaining with the Sopranos” charming and a lot of fun. If you are a fan of the Sopranos, the book makes the characters come alive as they write about their experiences including family traditions and those yummy Italian feasts. Many characters give advice on their area of home entertaining expertise. My favorite parts of the book are all the delicious recipes listed throughout-- including Carmela Soprano’s famous lasagna, as well as great tips on how to put together an authentic antipasto platter. The recipes include a wide variety of dishes: from appetizers, to side dishes, and finishing up with yummy desserts. The recipes are easy to follow and illustrated so you can see what the final result is supposed to look like. I can tell you first-hand that the end results have been tasty.
Another great aspect to the book is section on party planning tips. There is great information on how to stock a home bar from Arthur Bucco, as well as ideas on party gifts. There is even a step by step guide on napkin folding by Gabriella Dante because, as you may or may not know, she took a course on the art of napkin folding at the West Orange Arts & Crafts Center.
This book makes a great gift either for a home cook who wants experience with basic and classic Italian recipes, or for any Sopranos fan. That covers just about everybody I know.
