Improve Your Memory
by Dr. Gary Small
Techniques to help increase your brain power and thus help you remember better.
As I hit my mid-fifties, I have been feeling more and more the gentle nudging of age creeping in. I constantly forget things; my hands feel tight after I am on the computer too long, I come home from work ready to crash with exhaustion, and of course there are laugh lines everywhere- which is nothing to laugh about.
I am always on the lookout for ideas that will help me stave off the inevitable, with as much grace as possible. I seem to have trouble remembering anything lately- names, a random thought I was just about to say, the name of a movie, what I was just going to do when I entered a room- anything. Dr. Small suggests little techniques like taking a memory snapshot. He says that most of the time we forget, because we are all too busy, overworked and overstressed, and we need to become more consciously aware and focused.
We actually get anxious when we can't remember something or someone and that stress makes our memory worse. He suggests we stress down as part of our day, instead of stressing out. Breathing exercises for relaxation have been shown to actually help improve memory and retrieve information.
Another suggestion for better memory is to engage in mental aerobics like crossword puzzles, which will also help us perform better.
Some techniques like the "peg method" seemed a little too complicated, but others like the "look, snap, connect" method were easy to use.
I found this tape interesting and helpful and if I can just remember where I put it - I'll have my husband listen to it next.
