Chill Factor

by Sandra Brown

A serial killer is on the loose during a horrible blizzard.

“Chill Factor” is another best seller from the wonderful author Sandra Brown. It’s a wonderful mystery that will keep you glued to your seat until the last page. The book opens with Ben Tierney on a mountaintop inspecting five graves, including one freshly dug. These are the graves in which a dangerous serial killer has buried his recent victims. On the same mountain, a divorced couple, Lilly Martin and Dutch Burton, are arguing over the recent sale of their cabin. Dutch wants Lilly to take him back, but she feels their differences are irreconcilable. Moving in among the chaos is a terrible blizzard.

Out of anger, Dutch leaves Lilly at the cabin, claiming that as the chief of police he must direct traffic during the storm. He tells her not to wait much longer before she leaves, but the exhaustion from fighting causes her to fall asleep. When she awakens, the storm is well on its way to burying her and the cabin. She somehow manages, to get out of the cabin and start her car, but as she’s navigating around the mountains dangerous turns, Tierney appears out of no where, causing her to slam on the breaks and smash into a tree. With no car and Tierney injured, the two are forced to trek back up to the mountain and await a rescue.

Dutch, hearing Lilly’s broken messages becomes very upset and frantic to get back up the mountain. It becomes apparent that this is not the first time Lilly and Tierney have met and Lilly gave Dutch no clues as to their well being. The FBI agents that keep poking around and muttering about his incompetence don’t help Dutch keep his cool. The blizzard makes it impossible for him to travel back up the mountain.

Having nowhere else to go, Dutch turns to his arrogant, womanizing, best friend Wes Hammer. But Wes is having problems of his own. He’s the high school football coach, with an all-star son, Scott, who has no desire to be the legend that Wes feels he should be. Scott tries to please his parents, but lives his own life privately after hours.

The other quirky characters in the small town of Cleary, and their secrets, keep you glued to the pages, as you wonder what other things the townsfolk hide from one another. The men and women of Cleary have secrets you wouldn’t believe. The FBI agents nosing around, mixed with their cryptic information, keep you guessing the killer’s identity until the last second. As the plot unfolds you don’t know who you like and who you don’t. “Chill Factor” will keep you riveted with its intense plot twists until you get to the last page. You won’t be able to set it down.
